The United States said Wednesday that it supports the waiver of patent and other intellectual property protections for Covid-19 vaccines help to expand the production of life-saving recordings worldwide.
The decision is a partial victory for progressive Democrats who have urged President Joe Biden to support India and South Africa’s call for a comprehensive renunciation of all intellectual property protection for Covid-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.
The US must conduct detailed negotiations with the World Trade Organization on the scope of the exemption, whose members must unanimously agree to such a change. However, the change in the US position is likely to be seen as an important step in support of global efforts to fight the pandemic.
