Parents and families have learned “the power” teacher unions have over their children’s education, Wall Street Journal columnist and Fox News agent Jason Riley said during Fox News’ Journal Editorial Report on Saturday.
“The problem is, things are going as usual,” Riley said, commenting on the CDC, which almost literally adopted two of the guidelines recommended by the country’s second largest teachers’ union, the American Federation of Teachers.
“The problem is that the Biden government is taking dictation from the teachers unions like the Democrats have long done. That’s the problem here, they don’t follow science, they follow orders from union leaders who give lots of money to Democratic politicians and Democratic leaders, “Riley continues.

The panel also discussed the cozy relationship between Democrats and teacher unions, suggesting that there would be a cost to this for American students.
The Wall Street Journal’s assistant editor, Dan Henninger, said, “The story here is the closeness between the Democratic Party and teachers ‘unions and the contributions of the teachers’ unions.”
Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberley Strassel also noted that despite Biden’s claims, most students do not go back to school.
“The Department of Education released a poll this week … and it shows that only 54% of those in high school … are back in the classroom full-time,” said Strassel.
Strassel also noted that the numbers can be misleading, noting that in California only 5% of fourth graders are back in the classroom.

Riley concluded that the experience of the pandemic has shown that the interests of teachers’ unions are inconsistent with the interests of students.
“Teachers’ unions have long pretended their interests were a perfect match with those of the children,” said Riley. “I think their behavior during this pandemic, their resistance to getting back to work, and the harm we know has caused children, shows that their interests are inconsistent with those of the children and families . “
