Opinion | The Trump GOP conspiracy against Liz Cheney – and our democracy

They tell me how American democracy will ever be the same again and how these people can be trusted to give up power the next time they win the White House.

And while you’re at it, tell me how America can ever again be a credible observer and champion of democratic elections around the world – so important to our national security and the hopes and dreams of Democrats in all these countries that America is such consider a beacon of democracy and the rule of law. What will the elected autocrats say the next time we want to question the election results in Russia, Iran, Poland or Hungary?

They will say, “Listen to you? Your Republican Party turned a blind eye that told the biggest election lie in the history of the Milky Way Galaxy. And it wasn’t even in the service of an urgent, compelling policy. It was just that he could stay in power, save his ego, and deny that he had lost. “

So thank you Liz Cheney for doing something vital and clarifying – something only a conservative Republican like you can do: forcing the GOP at every level to decide whether to go with Trump and his big lie or the Constitution and the most important conservative principle of all – reverence for the rule of law.

Because if Trump and his friends are not stopped, one day they will get where they are going: they will close themselves off to minority rule in America. And when that happens, both Democrats and Republicans will take to the streets with principles and you can call it what you like, but it will feel like a new civil war.

I don’t use this term lightly or accidentally. We are all the product of our life experiences, and my first reporting experience was life in the Lebanese civil war in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

I’ve seen up close what happens when democratically elected politicians believe they can endlessly abuse their institutions, break redlines, weaken their judiciary, and buy reporters and TV channels – so that there is no truth, just versions of every story. And they think that they can do it endlessly – just cheat one more time, break one more rule, buy another vote – and the system will last until they can take it over and own it for their own ends.
