Prince Harry turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with Princess Diana’s death: “I was trying to mask something.”


Prince Harry revealed that he turned to drugs and alcohol following the sudden death of his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997.

The 36-year-old Duke of Sussex speaks openly with him about his mental health problems Oprah Winfrey in the new series “The me that you cannot see, “on Apple TV +.

The first episode of the expected series, released on Friday, shows Harry reflecting on the troubles he faced in the years following the Princess of Wales’s death. He was just 12 years old when she died in a traffic accident in Paris.

“I was ready to drink, I was ready to take drugs, I was ready to try and do the things that made me feel less. But I slowly realized that I didn’t drink Monday through Friday, but I’d probably drink a week in one day on a Friday or Saturday night, “Harry recalled.

“And I would drink, not because I was enjoying it, but because I was trying to mask something,” he said, adding that he “wasn’t even aware of it”.

Harry grappled with his mother’s death not just at a young age, but around the world. He walked behind her coffin at a televised royal funeral in front of millions of mourners.

Also on the show, Harry revealed that he had gone through “panic attacks” [and] severe fear “in performing royal duties.

“I would feel like my body temperature was two or three degrees warmer than everyone else in the room,” Harry recalled. “I would convince myself that my face was bright red and therefore anyone could see how I was feeling, but no one would know why, so it was embarrassing.”

Much of his stress came from “burnout” because he was the “yes” man for the royals, he said, explaining that he would be flying around the world in a very “hectic” way.

On the show, Harry said he had been in therapy for four years and learned from his therapist that he “never came to terms with” his mother’s death and that these feelings “come up as projections in different ways.”

“It was like someone had suddenly brought all the emotions that I had suppressed for so many years to the fore. And I saw family doctors [general practitioners]I saw doctors, I saw therapists, I saw alternative therapists. I’ve seen all kinds of people, “said the king.” But it was a meeting and a get-together with Meghan. I knew that if I didn’t go into therapy and repair myself I would lose this woman for the rest of my life with. “

Harry’s revelations about the five-episode streamer series come just months after his and Markle’s explosive two-hour interview with Winfrey aired. One of the jaw-dropping moments of the interview was the revelation that Markle was prevented from getting psychological help when she had thoughts of suicide.

“The thing that kept her from making it through was how unfair it would be for me after everything that had happened to my mother and now to be able to lose another woman in my life with a baby in her, our baby, “he said.

Well, Harry said His “greatest regret” is not to stand up for his wife and the “racism” she has experienced before.

“History repeated itself. My mother was chased to her death while in a relationship with someone who wasn’t white, and now see what happened,” said the king. “You want to talk about history repeating itself, they won’t stop until [Meghan] dies. “

Markle and Harry’s departure from royal duties began in March 2020 when they announced their decision to step down as senior members of the royal family. After moving to California, they did decided to make her life permanent outside of her royal duties.

Markle is currently pregnant with the couple’s second child, a girl expected this summer.
