The Gaza ceasefire ended President Joe Biden’s first major foreign policy crisis, but that is not counted as a victory for Team Biden. The ceasefire is encouraging, but it leaves Iran a big winner and the Democratic Party on the verge of a foreign policy disorder.
From a military point of view, Iran is delighted with the 3,700 rockets fired by its terrorist charges at Hamas. Iran also gathered valuable military intelligence to see how Israel’s Iron Dome defended itself against large rocket volleys of up to 200 per night.
Improving Hamas’ missile capabilities in Gaza was one of the late Qassim Soleimani’s personal projects. For the angry Iranian Quds Force he once commanded, the Hamas rocket strikes are another repayment for US forces’ assassination of Soleimani in January 2020.
Iran will also have observed the pace and nature of Israel’s precise air strikes against targets in the Gaza Strip. In addition, Iran took another opportunity to experiment with its drones. Israel claimed it shot down an Iranian armed drone, likely similar to the US forces that were shot down over Syria in 2017.
ISRAEL-HAMAS CEASE-FIRE BECOMES EFFECT, LIFE COMES BACK TO GAZA
In fact, after a week and a half, Iran was very happy with the fight in Gaza. “Palestinians could destroy all Israeli industrial plants and air force bases with rockets,” boasted General Hossein Salami, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, on Wednesday. That’s a stretch, but no question about it, Iran will use the Gaza fight as a tactical inspiration for other terror customers
They wonder if Hamas has agreed to partially stop because Iran had what it wanted – until now.
HAMAS LEADER THANKS IRAN FOR DELIVERING WEAPONS TO GAZA
There is no doubt that Team Biden worked hard for the truce. But against these seasoned villains, Team Biden was sluggish.
Last weekend, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was embroiled in conflicting reports of the Israeli strike in a building in Gaza used by the Associated Press, Al Jazeera and, apparently, Hamas. Hamas has done this before. France 24 reported that during the 2014 fighting, Hamas placed rocket launchers next to a hotel used by international journalists.
Do not forget that the armistice was brokered by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Biden called Sisi for the first time on Thursday. Biden was right to do so and thank Egypt from the White House podium on Friday.
VP KAMALA HARRIS, NOT BID, CALLED JORDAN’S KING ABDULLAH VIA ISRAEL GAZA OFFER
But how ironic. President Sisi, as Biden and Blinken vividly recall, was the Egyptian general who led the 2013 coup to drive out Islamic extremists and stabilize Egypt after the 2011 revolution, an uprising at which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama smiled. Obama, and presumably Biden, opposed Sisi’s takeover and suspended military aid for some time even after Sisi stood for election.
Waiting for Sisi, the 2014 Gaza truce broker, didn’t reflect much appreciation for Biden. Let’s hope there were more sensible action behind the scenes in what Biden described as “calm, relentless diplomacy”.

Gaza also revealed that when it comes to foreign policy, Democrats are a mess. Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Called for military aid to Israel to be suspended. In Dearborn, Michigan, 1,000 people came to a march Tuesday to support the Palestinians, including a giant red, white, green and black Palestinian flag carried in the street.
Many other nations around the world are groaning in both Palestine and Israel, but Biden seemed particularly unsure how to deal with Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich’s problems. and other. With Tlaib he went the emotional way, praising her “passion” and wishing her family members the best.
Biden has no margin for error in claiming the US leadership. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi incriminated Gaza early on by accusing the US of blocking UN Security Council action.
If Team Biden can’t keep up, China will try.

Hopefully it doesn’t come to that. Biden and Blinken still have the enormous advantage of a strong military link between the US and the region, the victory over ISIS secured under Trump and the Abraham Accords.
But don’t make a mistake. The US was also affected by the eleven days of the Gaza struggle.
