Pompeo says the Wuhan laboratory was involved in military activities in addition to civil research

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saturday that the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) was involved in military activities alongside its civilian research – amid re-examining the theory that the COVID-19 pandemic emerged from the secret laboratory.

“What I can say for sure is this: we know that within this laboratory they were involved in efforts related to the People’s Liberation Army so that military activity was being carried out in parallel with what they thought was just good old civil research,” said Pompeo on “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

“They refuse to tell us what it was, they refuse to describe the nature of either, they refused access to the World Health Organization when it tried to break in there.”

INTEL COMMUNITY “AGGRESSIVELY” INVESTIGATES THE ORIGIN OF COVID-19

Although it is widely recognized that the pandemic originated in Wuhan, there has been some debate as to whether it originated from a nearby wet market or a secret institute. The Trump administration promoted the laboratory leak theory, but it was downplayed by the media and some experts who declared it a conspiracy theory.

But it has picked up pace in recent weeks, especially after China blocked a World Health Organization investigation into the origins of the virus and reports that several laboratory workers were hospitalized with COVID-like symptoms in November

The secret service said this week it is working “aggressively” to investigate the origin of the virus – and is due to report to Biden within 90 days.

CHINA REFUSES SUPPORT WHEN COVID ORIGINS SOUND EXPEDITED BIDEN NOTICE ON US INVESTIGATIONS: OFFICIAL

“US intelligence does not know exactly where, when or how the COVID-19 virus was originally transmitted, but it has evolved around two likely scenarios: either it came naturally through human contact with infected animals, or it was a laboratory accident, “said Assistant National Intelligence Agency director for strategic communications, Amanda Schoch, said in a statement Thursday.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology, one of China’s leading virus research laboratories, built an archive of genetic information on bat coronavirus after the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003 and was criticized for its transparency during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BIDEN: INTEL COMMUNITY BETWEEN “TWO LIKELY SCENARIOS” TORN IN THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK SOURCE

But for Trump officials, this is something they have been suspecting for a while. President Trump thought the theory was believable and this week declared that it was confirmed.

“Now everyone agrees that I was right very early on when I named Wuhan a source of COVID-19, which is sometimes referred to as the China virus,” he said in a statement.

The State Department had released a leaflet in the Trump administration’s final days warning that “a laboratory accident could resemble a natural outbreak if initial exposure was few and worsened by asymptomatic infection.”

The factsheet also states that “the United States has determined that the WIV has collaborated with China’s military on publications and clandestine projects.”

“The WIV has been conducting secret research on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017, including laboratory animal experiments,” it says.

Pompeo said on Saturday it was important that the Biden government open an investigation into how the pandemic was originated and what is going on at the Wuhan Institute.

“I have known since the spring of last year 2020, when I first talked about it, that there is tremendous evidence that this escaped this laboratory in Wuhan,” he said. “We know that there were people there who got sick there, scientists who got sick there, we know that they were doing the profit of functional research – essentially taking viruses and making them more contagious, possibly more deadly, this government has to get afterwards . “
