3 dead in a shootout at Publix Supermarket in Florida

The bodies of three people, including a child, were found Thursday morning at a Publix grocery store in Palm Beach County, Florida, who said they were all fatally shot, according to authorities.

Authorities were called to the store in Royal Palm Beach, Florida at around 11:39 a.m., it said Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office said the shooter was among the dead.

“We are now documenting the scene,” said spokeswoman Teri Barbera to reporters on site. “We’re trying to find out what led to the shooting.”

Ms. Barbera said authorities found the bodies of a man, woman and child near the grocery department when they entered the store. Their names and ages were not published immediately.

“We believe it is possible they knew each other,” said Ms. Barbera. She added that investigators were reviewing security videos from the store and speaking to witnesses.

The store is in a mall called Crossroads, next to Okeechobee Boulevard and Royal Palm Beach Boulevard. The village of Royal Palm Beach is about 12 miles west of Palm Beach, Florida.

“Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy,” Maria Brous, a Publix spokeswoman, said in a statement. “We cooperate with the local authorities.”

Helicopter footage from local TV channels showed a heavy police presence with around 15 police cars on site.

An employee at a nearby Dollar Tree store said the place was locked.

Joey Mendoza, 62, told The Sun Sentinel that he was pulling into the parking lot on his way to the Publix when police cruisers and officers, some in tactical gear, approached the store.

“I saw them drive in, I didn’t get out of the vehicle,” he said. “They just got on. Cruiser after cruiser, ambulance after ambulance, fire engine after fire engine. “

Officials from nearby Crestwood Middle School temporarily locked the school, according to the Palm Beach County School District.
