Wisconsin turkey hunt harvest hits over 20 year lows

It’s a good time to be a turkey in Wisconsin.

According to recently released data, the state of Wisconsin recently had its lowest harvest in over two decades in the final turkey hunting season. According to some officials, they believe this is due to the lifting of lockdown orders in the state, which gave people more opportunities to spend their time.

Hunters in Wisconsin recorded only 37,179 wild turkeys during the spring hunting season. This number has decreased by 17% compared to the 2020 hunting season.

Alaina Gerrits, upland assistant wildlife ecologist for the Department of Natural Resources, spoke to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. According to her, the situation in the state has changed drastically in the past year.

She explained, “Last spring (2020) we were at the height of the Safer-at-Home order and a lot more hunters were available as there wasn’t much to do. This can be seen in a sharp drop in over-the-counter tags purchased in 2021. “

This is in contrast to a trend that emerged over the past year. As the coronavirus pandemic forced many states and companies across the country to close the lockdown and enforce orders, it appeared that more people were participating in outdoor activities.

Fox News previously reported that Pennsylvania’s 2020-21 deer harvest of 435,180 deer surpassed the previous year’s harvest of 389,431. That number included an estimated $ 174,780, which set a new state record.
