Poland’s top politicians and officials have been exposed to a “widespread” cyber attack, which the country says came from Russia.
“The main Polish officials, ministers and MPs from various political parties were exposed to a cyber attack,” said Jarosław Kaczyński, Poland’s most powerful politician and chairman of the National Security and Defense Affairs Committee.
An investigation by Polish and “allied” security services revealed that “the cyber attack was carried out from the territory of the Russian Federation. Its scope and reach are great, ”said Kaczyński.
According to an EU diplomat who knew about the incident, “the operational and technical analysis carried out by the Polish national cybersecurity incident response teams confirmed that the infrastructure and modus operandi used in cyberattacks were similar to those used by Russia-funded institutions were identical ”.
“More than 30 parliamentarians, government officials and some journalists were affected,” added the diplomat. “The attacks began in September 2020.”
Poland today called on EU countries in the EU Council to hold a ministerial debate on how to respond to the attacks, the diplomat said, adding that the issue would be discussed by foreign ministers on Monday.
“On Friday Poland handed over a document to the EU Member States, the European Commission and the Council on the details of the cyberattacks carried out in the past few days,” added the diplomat.
Cyber security services are in the process of briefing politicians and officials who have been hit by the attack, Kaczyński said in a statement.
